How the Unit Converter Works
Each category uses a base unit (meters for length, kilograms for weight, and so on). Every value you enter is first converted to the base unit, then converted from the base unit to all other units in the category. Temperature is handled separately using the direct conversion formulas between Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin.
Typing in Any Field
Unlike many converters that only accept input in one field, this converter lets you type in any field. When you type in the Miles field, for example, all other length units update to the equivalent value immediately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Select a category from the dropdown, then type a value in any unit field. All other fields in that category update automatically. You can type in any field, not just the first one.
The converter includes length (meters, feet, inches, kilometers, miles, yards, centimeters), weight/mass (kilograms, pounds, ounces, grams, tonnes, tons), volume (liters, gallons, milliliters, fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts), area (square meters, square feet, acres, hectares, square kilometers, square miles), speed (km/h, mph, m/s, knots), and temperature (Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin).
Most unit conversions are simple multiplication by a fixed factor. Temperature is different because the scales have different zero points. The formulas are: Fahrenheit = Celsius × 9/5 + 32, Celsius = (Fahrenheit - 32) × 5/9, and Kelvin = Celsius + 273.15.
One meter equals approximately 3.28084 feet, or 3 feet 3.37 inches. Equivalently, one foot equals exactly 0.3048 meters. These are exact values as defined by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures.
One pound equals exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. Equivalently, one kilogram equals approximately 2.20462 pounds. These conversion factors are exact by international definition.
